MERIDEN — A man faces charges after police said he drove off after hitting a woman and child with a vehicle on State Street last week.

Zechariah Ortiz, 46, of 4 Quarry Lane, was charged Sept. 7 with evading responsibility, risk of injury to a minor, failure to grant right of way to pedestrian, no insurance, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and failure to renew registration.

On Sept. 6 around 8:40 p.m. a woman and child were struck by a vehicle near State Street and Park Street. The child had scrapes to its face and head and the woman had fractures to her pelvis area, according to a police report. She told police they were crossing State Street when they were struck.

Officers were informed that a witness, who had video of the suspect vehicle, followed the suspect to the area of Quarry Lane, the report said. The witness told police he saw the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Ortiz, strike the two people, who rolled off the car and onto the road. The witness said the driver stopped for a few seconds then drove off and he followed, the report said.

Police noted the vehicle the witness pointed out, a white Subaru, had damage to the passenger side hood and a cracked windshield, the report said.

Ortiz was released on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Oct. 25.
