Police: Man found with stolen handgun during traffic stop in Meriden

MERIDEN — A man faces charges after police said he was found with a loaded firearm previously reported stolen during a traffic stop early Monday morning.

Carlton McCollough, 31, of Lydia, South Carolina, was charged with theft of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, weapon in a motor vehicle, no pistol permit and possession of a large capacity magazine. He also faces several drug charges and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Police discovered the firearm after pulling over a vehicle for a moving violation at around 3:40 a.m. at the intersection of East Main Street and Paddock Avenue.

Police searched McCollough, the front seat passenger, after smelling marijuana, and discovered the handgun. The serial number indicated it was reported stolen in Florence, South Carolina, in 2018. Police searched McCollough and found two prescription pills in a baggie. Police searched the vehicle and found a small amount of marijuana, the report said. There were two juveniles in the back seat of the car at the time, police noted.

McCollough was held on $100,000 bond.

He was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Monday and the case was transferred to New Haven Superior Court for June 30.
