MERIDEN — Police are seeking the public’s help finding the vehicle and driver authorities say fled the scene after striking and killing an elderly pedestrian on Old Colony Road Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. near 817 Old Colony Road. Arriving officers found an elderly man lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Darrin McKay said in a statement.

Officers spoke with witnesses and reviewed video surveillance footage, which showed a black Honda Accord strike the victim before driving off.

McKay said the vehicle was last seen speeding south down Old Colony Road, before turning east on Gypsy Lane.

Police request the public’s help in finding the vehicle, which McKay said should have a missing driver’s side mirror and a damaged windshield. Anyone with information should call the Meriden Police Department at 203-630-6201.

Police did not identify the pedestrian killed. But he was known to nearby residents and employees of businesses in the area, who were devastated by the news.

Yousef Silva, who works at nearby Colony Market, said the victim was a “really nice man” who was always very helpful and giving. He lived in the area and was a fixture in the neighborhood.

“He was always helping people,” Silva said. “He lived his life to please others.”
