MERIDEN — Two men face drug and weapons charges after police responded to an incident at an apartment complex in December.

Ryan Ortiz, 23, of 50 E 104th St., New York, New York and Jose Ortiz, 49, of 9 Randolph Ave., 2nd Fl., were both charged Sunday with operating a drug factory, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a sawed off shotgun.

Jose Ortiz was also charged with criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of ammunition.

The incident began on Dec. 26 around 7:15 p.m. when police responded to The Flats apartments, 390 Bee St., for a report of a man knocking on doors saying his car was stolen at gunpoint, according to a police report. Police also received several reports of gunshots in the area.

Officers searched the complex, finding an empty apartment with a shattered window and two shell casings, the report said. Police found marijuana and cash inside the apartment. A handgun was found “on the property” but it is unclear where exactly it was located. A wallet in apartment had Ryan Ortiz’s identification, the report said.

While police were on scene they detained a suspect seen running in the area. The suspect, later identified as Jose Ortiz, said he was running because he heard gunshots, the report said.

Jose Ortiz is a convicted felon and therefore prohibited from owning or possessing firearms, the report said.

Jose Ortiz was released after posting $350,000 bond and Ryan Ortiz was released after posting $250,000 bond. Both men are scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Feb. 20.
