MERIDEN — Police continue to investigate after two men were shot and killed in just over 24 hours this past weekend.

Police responded to 54 S. Broad St. around 2:40 a.m. Saturday for reports of gunshots. Officers found evidence of a shooting at the scene but no victims. A short time later, a local hospital reported treating two gunshot victims.

One man suffered a single gunshot wound to his leg. The second victim, a 20-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, police said in a statement.  According to police, the shooting stems from rival gangs targeting each other. As of Monday, police had not released the name of the man killed.

The second incident occurred in the area of 190 Grove St. on Sunday around 4:28 a.m. An officer heard multiple people yelling, then gunfire. Police did not locate any shell casings at the time and noted no witnesses remained at the scene, according to a police report. Police again responded to the area later in the morning for a report of a body on Foster Court. Casey Eric Schoonover, 34, of Meriden was shot and killed, according to police.

“The Meriden Police would like to add that at this time we do not believe that it was a random act of violence,” the statement said about the Foster Court incident.

Chief Roberto Rosado said officers continue to investigate and work on leads.
