MERIDEN — During her presentation at Success Academy, a local cosmetologist shared with students the struggles she overcame in order to become successful in her career as a makeup artist. 

Jessica Santoni, born and raised in Meriden, said most of her childhood revolved around abuse, which led to an unstable school and home environment. 

“I was born to an alcoholic father and a mother who was addicted to cocaine,” she said to a room full of students. 

The presentation took place at Success Academy, located at 191 Pratt St., on Wednesday afternoon for an hour. 

According to Santoni, while this wasn’t her first time talking about her career in front of students, it was the first time she shared her background. 

“I never pictured myself standing in front of a class and sharing all of that information and being so transparent,” she said. “But I felt like it was important for them to understand that you really can't control your circumstances, you can't control what you were brought into, but you really have control of your future.”

After being kicked out of high school, Santoni was able to graduate from an adult program at H.C. Wilcox Technical High School. Then she attended Middlesex Community College for two years. 

“It was either I transfer to a university or drop out and go to cosmetology school. So that's what I did,” she said. 

Her career in makeup started 12 years ago after she graduated from Paul Mitchell The New School North Haven in 2011. 

During her presentation, Santoni gave students a demonstration of how she applies makeup on her clients. The makeup artist has had Cardi B, the Love & Hip Hop cast, and Lil Nas X as clients. In addition, she has also done makeup for famous basketball and baseball players.

“I remember I would tell people that I would do makeup for famous people but they would always laugh at me and say it wouldn’t happen,” Santoni said. 

Santoni had the goal of not just proving them wrong, but achieving her dream. 

After graduating from Paul Mitchell, Santoni assisted in a salon. Afterwards, she started working at MAC Cosmetics at Westfarms Mall in Farmington. After getting passed over for manager positions, she decided it was time to pave her own way. 

“I kind of accidentally turned it into a business,” she said.

During the peak of her career in 2017, Santoni had to step back for a while. Her mother had died and she took on the responsibility of taking care of her two younger siblings. She was also three months pregnant and had a child. Santoni took that time to heal herself and invest in herself.

Now at 36, she is fully invested in her career and is working in the Connecticut and New York area. She does makeup for reality TV, weddings, quinceaneras, and more. 

Geniyah Anderson, senior, and Ayanna Perry, junior, were two of the students who Santoni demonstrated on. 

“She [Santoni] was very professional, gentle, and gave great advice,” Anderson said. “I really liked her advice and I can relate to a lot of her childhood.

Anderson says that she wants to build a career in the nail industry. “I was inspired and now I want to check out that North Haven school that she spoke about.”

Marissa Cardona, college and career coordinator for Meriden High Schools, arranged for Santoni to come and speak to the students. 

“As a college and career coordinator, the goal is to conduct career assessments with our students and Cosmetology is a popular field among many students,” Cardona said. “We always bring in speakers that can inspire the students and I thought that [Santoni] had a personal story where many students in our district have been impacted. Her story shows that you can overcome everything as long as you surround yourself with positive people and believe in yourself.”

MERIDEN - Durante su presentación en Success Academy, una cosmetologa local compartió con los estudiantes los retos que tuvo que sobrepasar para poder ser exitosa en su carrera como artista de maquillaje.

Jessica Santoni, nacida y criada en Meriden, contó que la mayoría de su niñez consistió en abuso, lo cual causó un ambiente de hogar y escolar inestable.

“Yo nací de un padre alcohólico y de una madre adicta a la cocaína,” ella le contó a un cuarto lleno de estudiantes.

La presentación se llevó a cabo en Success Academy, localizada en la 191 Pratt St., el miércoles por la tarde, por una hora.

Según Santoni, aunque esta no fue su primera vez hablando acerca de su carrera con estudiantes, si fue la primera vez que comparte su historia.

“Nunca me imaginé que estuviera frente a una clase compartiendo toda esta información y siendo tan transparente,” ella dijo. “Pero sentí que era muy importante que ellos entendieran que uno no puede controlar sus circunstancias, no puede controlar de donde procede, pero sí tiene el control sobre su futuro.”

Después de ser expulsada de la escuela superior/preparatoria, Santoni pudo graduarse de un programa para adultos en H.C. Wilcox Technical High School. Después, asistió a Middlesex Community College por dos años.

“Después tenía que trasladarme a una universidad, o salirme, e ir a una escuela de cosmetologia. Así que eso fue lo que hice,” ella dijo.

Después de graduarse de Paul Mitchell, Santoni ayudó en un salón. Después, comenzó a trabajar en MAC Cosmetic en el Westfarms Mall en Farmington. Después de no ser aceptada para la posición de gerente, ella decidió que era tiempo de formar su propio camino.

“Ella [Santoni] fue muy profesional, delicada, y dio muy buenos consejos,” dijo Anderson. “Me gustaron sus consejos y me identifico con muchas partes de su niñez.”

Anderson dijo que ella quiere crear su carrera en la industria de uñas. “Me inspiró, y ahora quiero averiguar acerca de la escuela en North Haven, de la cual nos contó.”

Marissa Cardona, coordinadora de universidad y carreras para las Meriden High Schools, programó la presentación, para que Santoni viniera a hablar con los estudiantes.

“Como coordinadora de universidad y carreras, la meta es llevar a cabo evaluaciones de carreras con nuestros estudiantes y la cosmetología es una industria popular entre nuestros estudiantes,” dijo Cardona. “Siempre traemos a oradores que pueden inspirar a los estudiantes en nuestro distrito y pensé que [Santoni] tenía una historia personal similar a la que ha impactado a muchos de los estudiantes en nuestro distrito. Su historia nos enseña que uno puede superar lo que sea, si se rodea de personas positivas y cree en uno mismo.”
