MERIDEN — The Midstate Chamber of Commerce will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday with its Taste of Salsa event on the Meriden Green from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

According to Marisol Rodriguez, chairperson of  the chamber’s Hispanic Outreach Leaders in Action, the event will raise funds for scholarships for Latino students. It will include a salsa-tasting contest, raffles, a live DJ from United Rhythms Dance Studio and mariachi performances from the Spanish Community of Wallingford School of Music.

“What we wanted to do was engage community partners,” she said.

Local businesses — including La Poblanita Grocery, Mr. Taco and Frida Restaurant and Grocery — will be participating in the salsa contest.

HOLA held the Taste of Salsa fundraiser last year in August on a smaller scale, Rodriguez said.

“The intent of this was also to promote some of our Latino owned businesses and restaurants in the area,” Rodriguez said.

Bringing the community together to celebrate Hispanic heritage as well as raising funds for students is important to Rodriguez because students are the future of the community, she said.

“It’s kind of like a win-win [situation],” she said.

Evangeline Mendoza Bourgois, founder and director of SCOW’s School of Music, said that the mariachi musical performance will include singing and dancing.

She said these types of events give her students the best opportunity to perform because it’s a celebration of their own culture. The SCOW group is set to perform at various events in Connecticut throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Bourgois said.

Rodriguez encouraged people to bring lawn chairs to the event.

Community Health Center and Liberty Bank are the event sponsors.

The entrance fee to Taste of Salsa is $10. Attendees can buy tickets at the door or register in advance through Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/hola-presents-taste-of-salsa-on-the-green-tickets-169648325709
