MERIDEN — A dump truck rollover left tons of dirt and rocks on Interstate 691 and Lewis Avenue and will likely keep at least one lane of the eastbound side of the highway closed until late Monday.
State police closed the highway’s three lanes shortly after the accident was reported at the Lewis Avenue overpass at 1:45 p.m. One lane was reopened by 4 p.m., with the rest likely to stay closed for five or six hours, a dispatcher at Troop I-Bethany said.
The truck was torn open and its axles and engine torn away in the crash. A large rock fell from the truck onto Lewis Avenue but did nothing more than crater the road. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hartford Hospital, Meriden Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said.
“There was quite a bit of damage to the truck,” Dunn said.
The accident backed traffic up for miles. Interstate 691 is a major portion of the traffic grid of Central Connecticut, connecting I-91, I-84 and Route 15, main routes between Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury.
The accident remains under investigation.
