Ever since she was young, Amitojeroop “Ami” Kaur has wanted a career in the health care industry. That is why she went to Wilcox Technical High School to study health technology.

“Wilcox gave me so many opportunities and the community was phenomenal,” Kaur said.

While at Wilcox, Kaur has been a member of the girls tennis team and student council and served as co-vice president of the National Honor Society and class treasurer.

Over her four years in high school, Kaur said she learned that “in order to obtain something, you have to work really hard.” She did just that and became the 2021 class valedictorian.

“I was following the class ranks ever since the beginning of my junior year,” Kaur said. “Before that I didn’t really know what the ranks were used for and I didn’t find out until maybe the beginning of my senior year that they actually give you a full scholarship to UConn so that made me become even more motivated to push my grades up.”

Kaur will major in biology, with a minor in psychology at the University of Connecticut. After receiving her undergraduate degree she plans to continue on with school to become a physician associate.

Even though her favorite class at Wilcox was psychology, Kaur said all of the classes she took were beneficial.

“All of the classes have given me a different perspective of different career paths I could choose and different ideas,” Kaur said. “... All of the teachers are really nice about their subjects and they teach you really well.”

Robert Janiga, science teacher and head coach of the girls tennis team, described Kaur as a very “intuitive and sharp individual” who was always willing to help others.

“For a while we were using this computer program for math which a lot of kids had a tough time with so I found out a lot of these kids were struggling in one of my study halls,” Janiga said. “She would come in and volunteer to tutor those kids out of her own time.”

As graduation approaches, Kaur said that she is grateful for the opportunities the Wilcox community has given her and for all of its support.

“(Wilcox is) really an experience I will never forget,” Kaur said.
