MERIDEN – A funeral service will be held Thursday for longtime City Councilor Walter Shamock, who died Friday at the age of 89.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center, 175 E. Main St, according to Shamock’s obituary. There will be no calling hours, the obituary says, and burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Shamock, first elected in 1989, served 28 years on the council and attended his final council meeting last month just a few weeks before passing. Shamock was respected by both sides of the aisle for fighting for the city and being respectful of others despite disagreements.

“Walt put (the people of Meriden) before himself,” former councilor Tony Tomassetti said Friday. “They’ll never make another Walt Shamock.”

Shamock’s obituary states that, in lieu of flowers, donations “may be made to the TRUMP 2020 Campaign by mailing a personal check be made payable to “Donald Trump for President, Inc.” Donald J. Shamock is survived by his wife, Norma; his daughter, Lisa Marie; his sons, Todd Walter and Gary William Shamock; two grandchildren, Wade Paul and Taylor Lee Pettingill. He also leaves behind two nephews, Richard, and William (Connie) Shamock and sister-in-law Lauretta Shamock.
