Mail truck catches fire near gas pumps in North Haven

NORTH HAVEN — Mail was damaged when a Postal Service truck went up in flames at a gas station on Route 5 Wednesday morning.

No injuries were reported.

The truck caught fire around 10 a.m. at a Mobil Station at 276 Washington Ave. The fire was contained to the mail truck, which was parked next to a gas pump.

“Fortunately (an) employee acted fast and prevented something worse from potentially happening,” Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said, referring to a gas attendant that was able to quickly turn off the gas pumps when he saw smoke.

A fire investigator will determine the exact cause, but Januszewski said it looks like the fire started in the engine.

The damaged mail will be investigated by a postal inspector, who was on scene.
