NORTH HAVEN — Firefighters responding to a reported fire that had started in the garage of an Allendale Drive residence were able to prevent the blaze from spreading.

Fire chief Paul Januszewski said a neighbor, who saw smoke coming from the garage of the home at 11 Allendale Drive, called in the fire shortly before 5:30 p.m  The residents were not home at the time the fire.

Responding crews observed visible smoke coming from the garage area. There was already heavy fire in the garage, which had extended into the rooms adjacent to the garage, including a kitchen area, Januszewski said.

Firefighters, who attacked the fire from the ground and the attic area, had the blaze under control within 45 minutes. The actual fire damage was limited to the area around the garage. Most of the home was not damaged directly by the fire, but had been damaged by smoke.

The residents are temporarily displaced and staying with other family members, Januszewski said.

No firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
