Curbside pickup

The Staff and Trustees of the Plainville Public Library are pleased to announce the return of curbside pickup service. The service, which re-started May 18, is provided with a few adjustments from the last time around.

This service is available to Plainville residents only who have a valid Plainville library card. We adore our patrons from neighboring communities, and we look forward to serving you again whenever our doors reopen. However, this restriction is necessary to control demand.

Holds are limited to items owned by the Plainville Public Library. Items from other libraries are unavailable.

Holds can be placed either online or by phone. Staff is available to answer calls from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday.

To place a hold online, visit to search our catalog. To place a hold by phone for adult materials, dial 860-793-1446. To place a hold by phone for children & teen materials, dial 860-793-1450.

There will be no same-day pickup available. For instance, if you place a hold on a Monday by 2 p.m., then you will receive a call or email later in the day informing you that your pickup will be available at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Any holds placed after 2 p.m. on a Monday through 2 p.m. on Tuesday will be available at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

There is no need to call the library when you are ready to pick up your items. Items will be checked out to you the night before, put in a bag with your last name on it, and placed on a table in the parking lot entrance vestibule for pickup at your convenience (10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday).

We request patrons wear a mask and gloves, and only one person at a time is allowed in the vestibule. There will be entry available into the vestibule, but not the library itself. Absolutely no patrons are permitted to enter the library beyond the vestibule.

There will be no staff person available in the vestibule. If you have questions about your order or need assistance, call the library from outside.

Staff is prohibited from any direct contact with the public.

Items not picked up within five days will be checked in and put back into circulation. Patrons would then have to place a hold again and move to the end of the queue.

When is the library reopening?

As of now, the library has no set date for reopening our doors to the public. While staff remains eager to see our friends again, there are building and service adjustments to be made, supplies to be obtained, and policies to arrange, before we can serve you safely again. It will be a long time before we can resume hosting programs and meetings or allow patrons to spend extended periods of time working, relaxing, playing or socializing in the building. The personal, face-to-face interactions at which we excel will be at arm’s length for quite some time out of necessity; but our hearts remain open to the community regardless of physical proximity. Check our Facebook page and our website for updates.

Please accept our best wishes for good health and happy reading!
