Knights promote Catholic education through annual scholarships

For many years, the Rev. Gerald T. Corrigan Council 3544 of the Knights of Columbus in Plainville has  awarded $1,000 scholarships to graduating students from Plainville High School and St. Paul Catholic High School who will continue their education at a Catholic college or university.

The most recent recipients of the Eugene Matteo Memorial Knights of Columbus Scholarship are:

2021 – Hannah Peck, Plainville High; Andrew Pauloz, St. Paul. 2020 – Alyssa Giancarli, Plainville High; Katherine Wolfgang, St. Paul.

The scholarship started more that two decades ago with a donation from the Ringrose family, and was expanded with a donation made in memory of Paul Bogdanski. Now, the scholarship is supported primarily by the Matteo family.

In 2019, Council 3544 initiated The Normand L. Ortner Memorial Knights of Columbus Scholarship, a $500 prize awarded annually to a local middle school student who will attend St. Paul.

The 2021 Ortner scholarship winners are Elizabeth Sinms and Alexis Hester.
