PLAINVILLE — A Bristol man faces drug possession and distribution charges related to a fentanyl overdose earlier this month.

Matthew Alyward, 36, of Bristol, was charged with sale of narcotics, possession of various controlled substances including fentanyl, criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, possession of a stolen firearm, pistol permit violation, sixth degree larceny by possession, weapons in motor vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On May 1, police responded to a near-fatal heroid/fentanyl overdose on Diamond Avenue. A witness told police the drugs were purchased from Alyward. Early the next day, officers observed Alyward make a drug transaction from a vehicle at the end of a cul-de-sac on Burnham Road in Plainville, police said.

Police found more than 300 wax fold bags of fentanyl, about 68 grams each, seven suboxone packages, assorted drug and drug packaging paraphernalia, less than a gram of crack cocaine, and more than $1,500 of cash believed to be from drug sales.

The driver was released from the scene after Alyward said all the materials belonged to him.

Alyward was held on a $100,000 surety bond. He is scheduled to appear at New Britain Court on June 24.
