MERIDEN — A vintage home built by Benjamin Curtis in 1780 is on the market for $269,900.

The four-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath colonial at 54 Curtis St. has 2,608 square feet of living space with eight rooms, four fireplaces, wood beams and hardwood floors. An open house is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

“The house in particular has some historical significance,” said listing agent Judy Mik of Berkshire Hathaway New England Properties.

According to Mik, the home was part of a 200-acre estate owned by the Curtis family. Benjamin Curtis, son of Lemuel Curtis, built the house for himself, his wife and 14 children. The property, which sits on .65 acres at the corner of Curtis Street and Markham Place, is not listed on a state or national historic registry, which allows a new owner flexibility to make renovations.

The current owner has lived in the home for 20 years. There have been improvements made to modernize the mechanicals, and update to gas heat. It has a newer roof, a remodeled kitchen and laundry.

“There are some lovely historic homes on that street, this is one of the older ones,” Mik said. “There is good accessibility with a country feel in the backyard. It’s perfect for people looking for quick access.”

There is a formal dining room with wainscoting, library features and a wall of built-in bookcases, formal living room with built-in storage and access to a sunroom.

Front and back staircases lead to four bedrooms upstairs with a full bath and plenty of storage.

Modern updates include a remodeled kitchen, first floor laundry area, half bath, vinyl siding, and 200 amp electrical system.

The lot is landscaped with stone walls, plantings, sidewalks and a private patio area that overlooks the property.
