SOUTHINGTON — As the weather warms, Mel’s Bike Rental offers another option for exploring the town’s linear trail.

The business, at 991 S. Main St., opened last month and will operate on the weekends until June 24, when daily summer hours begin. Customers can rent classic-style cruiser bikes for adults and children and be on the trail in minutes, owner Melissa Martucci said.

Martucci, a fourth-grade teacher in Wethersfield, and her family used to travel to Cape Cod every year for summer vacation while she was growing up. They would rent bikes close to where they stayed.

“It was a nice way to explore and felt very freeing,” Martucci said. “It was kind of like this adventure I would look forward to every year.”

She still loves being outside and exploring nature. Her passions gave her the idea for the new business.

She loved the area around the linear trail when she visited and was excited to find a location that was close to the trail.

The business offers different pricing plans for every budget and need, she said. Even if residents own their own bicycles, a rental is an easy way to get out for the day without lugging bikes around, Martucci added.

The new business will help people explore downtown and the trail, said Barbara Coleman-Hekeler, president of the Southington Chamber of Commerce. The chamber works to promote attractions and tourism in town.

“As a chamber, we are really excited about the access Mel’s will provide,” Coleman-Hekeler said Monday. “Getting people outside in a healthier way, moving and exercising. We’ve been so sequestered the last couple of years it’s nice to see a business come in and help people do that.”

Martucci said she is working on creating community events that will be listed on her website. Every rental comes with a helmet and a lock.
