DMV reports dramatic growth in online services



Earlier this year, the DMV began offering many online renewal services. Residents quickly took advantage of the services with online services outpacing in-person services for the first five months of the year.

The DMV processed 85,370 online license renewals between January and May this year, Gov. Ned Lamont announced this past week. In comparison, the agency processed 60,377 in-person renewals during the same period.

“The fact that you now have many more people renewing their license online, than you have coming in line, shows that it is working,” Lamont said in a statement. “Having a government that is not only efficient, but really puts the customer first, makes sure it’s a system that works for you.”

The DMV has implemented the ability for residents to complete license and ID renewal and duplicate requests, boat registration renewal, drive history requests and more online.

Other services, like address changes, have also seen an uptick online with 22,052 web transactions from March, when it first came available, to May. By contrast, 7,459 address changes were done in person.

Yvonne deAngeli Fontanez, a Meriden resident, received an email from the DMV offering the chance to renew her license online during the beginning stages of the rollout.

“I filled out a form, scanned it and sent it in,” she said. “It was ridiculously easy. I posted about it, it was so easy. Everything should be online.”

Fontanez wrote in her Facebook post “I was just able to renew my CT driver’s license online and I am super excited about that. Great job Connecticut.”

AAA offers certain DMV services for AAA and non-AAA customers. Although services, like license renewals, are currently available online, Amy Pottenger, Greater Hartford’s AAA public affairs manager, said she is still noticing traffic in the building. 

“It’s actually been really great,” Parmenter said. “Initially, the appointments were by appointment only. Now that there’s a little bit more leeway, we are still by appointment but if there are walk-ins we try to accommodate those people as well.”

AAA offices perform license and ID renewals, along with providing duplicate licenses, IDs and Learner’s Permits and name changes on licenses, IDs and Learner’s Permits. 

Tina Chamberlain, of New Britain, and Martel Bey, of Stamford, visited the Southington AAA location Friday afternoon for license renewals.  

“It’s really easy and convenient to come here,” Chamberlain said. “I haven’t heard about the online services but I probably will still continue to come here. I’m old school.”

Lamont said it has been his administration’s priority to move services online so residents can skip in-person visits and submitting forms through the mail. Moving forward the DMV has plans to increase accessibility for residents.

“Our efforts to improve customer relations are ongoing,” DMV Deputy Commissioner Tony Guerrera said. “Customers can expect to see our list of online transactions grow throughout 2021.”
