SOUTHINGTON — An international day care and early childhood education company is looking to establish a location in town on West Street.

An Avon-based development company is requesting town permission to build a 10,000 square-foot day care for The Learning Experience along with a 5,000-square-foot playground area. The site, located at 1268 West St., will be able to hold about 150 children.

Eric Spungin, a partner with the development company Southington West Street LLC, said he hopes to begin construction in the spring if local approvals are granted.

He said The Learning Experience also has a location under construction in Cheshire along with existing locations.

“There’s other Learning Experience, one in South Windsor, Newington and Enfield,” Spungin said.

He expected the public hearing for the application to take place in January.

The Learning Experience has 11 locations in Connecticut and is developing six more. In addition to Cheshire and Southington, the company is looking to expand to Vernon, Hamden, West Hartford and Wilton.

“Child care will always be a necessity for families however, we continue to see growth, specifically in the Connecticut market, and expansion of the brand in this market has been part of our strategic plan,” said Brad Wahl, The Learning Experience’s chief brand officer.

The company does extensive demographic analysis to determine where it should add locations and where child care is in the greatest demand, according to Wahl.

“For example, we’ve identified that in Southington there are almost 7,000 children under the age of five within five miles of our preschool in development and the area has a projected growth rate of 3.1 percent,” he said.

The company operates in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Late last year, Southington planners approved a 30-unit subdivision on a large parcel behind the property at 1268 West St. The development is in a long stretch parallel to Churchill Street with a small portion of West Street frontage.

Spungin said the day care development is separate from the housing subdivision, although nearby.
