After 15 years in Meriden, Mexican eatery expands into Southington

SOUTHINGTON – A Mexican restaurant with 15 years in Meriden is working to open its second location on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike.

Luis Lemus started Tacos Mi Nacho at 550 Broad St. While he’s tried to expand, other deals have fallen through he said.

Lemus hopes to open the second location at 1796 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike next month. He’s moving into a former Blimpie’s restaurant but needs to renovate the building to suit his needs.

“We were invited to go to Southington by the owner of the building,” he said. “I think it’s a great location, that’s why we’re doing it.”

Rosemarie Larosa owns the property according to town records.

An exact opening date is hard to predict since Lemus is still waiting on coolers, kitchen equipment and other deliveries before he can complete the restaurant. In Southington, he’ll have a larger kitchen which will allow him to add more menu items than those available in Meriden such as fish tacos, shrimp tacos and enchiladas.

“I think we’re going to be a little bit more extensive in Southington,” Lemus said.

Much of Tacos Mi Nacho’s business is take out. While the restaurant’s seating is limited by pandemic restrictions, Lemus said he’s got a large following of loyal customers and that take-out service remains strong.

He’s hopeful that a location close to the highway and other stores in Southington will do well.

Some of the workers from the Meriden location will transfer to Southington. They’ll take the original recipes to keep the taste of food consistent between locations, Lemus said. He’s also looking to hire a few more people at the Southington restaurant.

Customers cheered the news that Tachos Mi Nacho would have a second location.

Amy Banasiewicz, a member of the Facebook group Meriden Talks, was impressed with the expansion during dificult times for many restaurants.

“Not even Covid can keep people from their Tacos Mi Nacho,” she wrote.
