Southington man charged with assaulting senior citizen, possession of a controlled substance



 

SOUTHINGTON — A local man faces charges after police said he assaulted a senior citizen after being found asleep in a car with drugs and paraphernalia. 

Jason Bednarz, 27, of 697 S. End Road, was charged Saturday with third-degree assault of an elderly person, disorderly conduct, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Bednarz got into an argument with a 66-year-old around 2:15 p.m. after Bednarz was found sleeping in a vehicle, according to police spokesman Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz. The 66-year-old also found what appeared to be crack cocaine and a smoking pipe.

The argument escalated and Bednarz punched and kicked the senior while the person was on the ground, Dobratz said. The person suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention. Police seized the drugs and paraphernalia. 

Bednarz was taken into custody and later released on $10,000 bond.
