Southington school officials announce hiring of new pupil personnel services director

SOUTHINGTON — School officials announced the hiring of a new director of pupil personnel services, a position that oversees special education services across the Southington Public Schools. 

Rebecca Cavallaro will start in the new position on July 1. She will earn a salary of $158,050, according to the district. She will succeed the current director, Margaret Walsh, who will retire at the end of the school year. 

Cavallaro, who is presently employed in a similar position in the Oxford Public Schools district, is certified as an administrator and certified as an educator with an endorsement in hearing impaired education, according to a resume school officials provided. She holds a master’s degree in education from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Cavallaro also holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and communications from Western Connecticut State University.

Cavallaro was selected from a total pool of 40 applicants. That pool was narrowed to four finalists, Connellan said in an email.

He described Cavallaro as “an experienced, dedicated professional.” 

“She is intelligent, articulate and completely student focused.  Rebecca’s experience in working with larger districts will serve the Southington community well.  She is an extremely good match for the size and complexity of a school district like Southington that sets very high standards for students and staff,” Connellan wrote.  

The Board of Education, during a meeting that was conducted by telephone, voted to suspend its policy regarding the hiring of central office administrators who directly supervise certified staff. 

That policy states the board “hires the Business Manager, Athletic Director, the Language Arts Coordinator and all administrators who have direct supervisory responsibilities of certified personnel.”

Board of Education chairwoman Terri C. Carmody said the temporary suspension of the policy “allows the superintendent to do the hiring in adminsitrative position without the Board of Education having to do the interview.

“We looked over the application and went by his recommendation,” Carmody said, adding that the board’s first teleconferenced meeting “went very well.”

The board’s next meeting, scheduled for April 23, will also be teleconferenced, Carmody said.
