SOUTHINGTON — Starting today, Southington Public Library patrons will be able to pick up physical copies of books, movies and other materials.
The library announced a new on-demand pickup service in a news release.
“We are working on trying to provide as many services possible,” Library Director Kristi Sadowski said. The library is also planning to offer wireless printing, enabling patrons to send documents to be printed and picked up.
For the on demand pick up service, patrons can reserve items by using the library's online catalog, or by calling 860-628-0947, and then dialing extension 2.
Patrons can ask for items by title, or ask for a staff recommendation. After doing that, they can then schedule a pick-up. Library staff will call to set up the pick-up day and time.
Sadowski said patrons using the pickup service call the library upon arrival. A staff member will bring the items in a brown paper bag to a table set up next to the library's back door and wave to the patron.
Once the staff member re-enters the library building, patrons can open the exterior door to retrieve their items.
Like other public buildings, the library has been closed to the public as officials sought to slow the spread of COVID-19. While patrons may not have been able to obtain physical copies of books, movies, toys and puzzles, they still had access to digital materials, programs and other services through its website, https://www.southingtonlibrary.org/. All items that had previously been lent out have a new due date: July 1, according to a notice on the website.
The on-demand service will be available Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Leaders say service will expand after a set of lockers arrive later this month, allowing for after-hours and weekend pick up.
Sadowski said the library has already begun fielding requests ahead of the first day of pick-up.
Another service the library is looking to start is a homebound delivery service for patrons who are unable to come to the library, whether due to illness or for other reasons.
“We actually have not offered that before,” Sadowski said.
Under that service, Southington residents can sign up to receive monthly library materials delivered to their front step.
The library is also planning to offer other virtual services.
Patrons seeking more information regarding any of these services can contact a library staff person by emailing email@example.com or by calling 860-628-0947.
