SOUTHINGTON — A town man was charged Sunday after police said he violated a protective order by driving his car at a woman.

Thomas Smith, 35, of 25 Mountain View Road  was charged with second-degree breach of peace, first-degree reckless endangerment, and violation of a protective order.

Smith was involved in a dispute with two other people in the area of Hobart Street and Mountain View Drive around 6 p.m. Sunday. During the incident, Smith threw a beer can from his vehicle and into the road, according to a press release from police.

When one of the other people involved in the dispute went to pick up the can, Smith accelerated his vehicle towards her before swerving away, the press release said.

Police later determined there was a protective order between Smith and the woman he drove at.
