SOUTHINGTON — The Town Council voted Monday night to award contracts for for residential leaf collection.
The council awarded the contracts with the support of the Public Works Commission and town engineer.
“I’m very happy to say all the top bids are going to be awarded to Southington companies,” said John Barry, a councilor and commission chairman.
The companies include HQ Landscaping, Janet Sweeping, Shaw Vac Service, Valentine Construction, Tri State Industrial Maintenance, JVIII Construction, and Marek Brothers Construction. Barry said several firms were selected because officials felt one company would not be able to do all the work.
The leaf pickup schedule will likely be determined in October, Barry said, and is somewhat dependent on weather.
All companies awarded contracts have worked on the leaf pickup in previous years and have done “satisfactory” work, Town Engineer Annette Turnquist said in a Sept. 6 memo to the town manager.
Barry said they were able to accept all local bids due to a town ordinance that says if a Southington-based bidder is within a percentage of the low bid, they have the opportunity to match the low bid.
The council also awarded a temporary labor contract to Total Logistics Staffing in East Hartford . The firm will be paid $15.15 per hour per worker.
