4 rescued after catamaran capsizes in Long Island Sound

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — Authorities say four people have been rescued from Long Island Sound after a catamaran capsized near a rocky reef known for causing shipwrecks.

New London, Connecticut, fire officials say the Coast Guard was alerted shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday that a catamaran capsized near Race Rock, just southwest of Fishers Island, New York.

Officials say the Coast Guard pulled one person out of the water and the others were rescued by people on a private boat.

Authorities say the people from the catamaran were in the water for about 20 minutes. All four were brought to New London and transported to hospitals to be treated for potential hypothermia. Their conditions haven’t been released.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the catamaran to capsize.
