Former college basketball star fatally shot in Hartford

HARTFORD (AP) — A former star basketball star at Albertus Magnus College has been shot and killed in Hartford, authorities said.

The Hartford Courant r eports that Jaqhawn Walters, 24, was shot shortly after noon Saturday on Main Street. Friends drove him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said Jason Stone, 33, called police and confessed to the shooting. Stone was arrested on a murder charge. It’s not clear if he has an attorney who can speak for him.

The Courant reports that surveillance shows a brief fight between two men, followed by the shooting.

Walters graduated from Albertus Magnus in 2018 after earning all-conference honors three times. He finished his college career with 1,821 points and 1,167 rebounds and had signed a contract to play basketball professionally for a club in Argentina.

Albertus Magnus President Marc Camille said the college would hold a prayer service in Walters’ memory.

“For those of us fortunate enough to know Jaqhawn, or ‘JQ’ as he was affectionately known to so many, we remember his beaming smile and larger than life personality, bringing joy to everyone around him, whether it was on the basketball court, in the classroom, or in spaces across our campus,” Camille said in a statement on the college website.
