State police seek witnesses to fatal crash on I-91 in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN — A Branford man was killed when his truck rear-ended an unoccupied van on Interstate 91 and rolled onto its side, state police said.

Richard J. Vining, 69, of 56 Lindsley Road, Branford, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred in the median of the southbound side of the highway, just south of Exit 20 and Country Club Road, about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, police said.

Vining had just driven on the highway and into the acceleration lane before hitting the van, which was stopped and unoccupied, and then hitting a guardrail, police said.

Any witness to the collision or anyone who had a vehicle equipped with a dashboard camera is asked to call state police Trooper John Wilson at Troop H in Hartford at 860-534-1098 or through email at john.wilson@ct.gov.
