Man drowns while swimming with friend at Fairfield reservoir

FAIRFIELD (AP) — A 35-year-old man drowned Sunday while swimming with a friend at a Fairfield reservoir, police said.

Police and fire department dive teams found the body of Karlis Eltermanis, of Bridgeport, in nearly six feet (1.8 meters) of water in the Samp Mortar Reservoir at about 12:45 p.m.

The friend called 911 shortly after 8:30 a.m. to report that Eltermanis had gone under the water off Lake Hills Beach No. 1 and had not surfaced for about three minutes, police said.

Fairfield police and firefighters and Bridgeport police searched the reservoir and found Eltermanis’ body about 50 feet (15 meters) from shore.

Fairfield police and the chief medical examiner’s office are investigating.
