MIDDLEFIELD — The more than 350,000 red and yellow sunflowers are in bloom and the 14th annual Lyman Orchards Sunflower Maze is in full swing.

The two-and-a-half acre maze opened for business on July 25 and has seen a steady flow of visitors on the vast grounds of Lyman Orchards, 32 Reeds Gap Road.

John Lyman, executive vice president, secretary and treasurer of Lyman Orchards, said people seem happy to return to some normalcy, including the annual sunflower maze.

This year’s theme is “Back in Space” — featuring space facts, trivia and clues.

“People will find out a little bit about the U.S. Space Program as well as planets in our solar system,” Lyman said.

The maze typically takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

“This is a different experience than the corn maze,” Lyman said. “Adults can see over the flowers. But it’s nice because you can see all of the flowers as well as yellow finch’s and butterflies. It’s also located in the orchard so you can look out into the hills. It’s a really nice setting and a fun activity for the family.”

The maze is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and $1 of each admission is donated to Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 to 12. Children under 3 are free. Last entry into the maze is at 4:30 p.m.

Lyman Orchards has donated more than $132,000 since 2007.

Masks are required when you can’t keep six feet away from other groups. However, once you are in the maze and maintaining space, masks can be removed. It’s the same policy Lyman Orchards has for its “pick your own” activities.

“Weekends are busier,” Lyman said. “If the schedule allows it, come during the week. Monday through Thursday are typically slower days.”

Lyman said the maze averages 12,000 to 13,000 visitors while it is open. However, last year was a record year with 25,000 guests. This year’s  Sunflower Maze closes on Aug. 30.

The Lyman Orchards Corn Maze is scheduled to open Sept. 5 and run through Nov. 8.
