DURHAM — A lot has changed over the years at 100 Durham Road, currently home to the Horseshoe Taverne.
Since Time Out Taverne closed last February, the building has seen new paint, new owners, a new entrance, a new bar, and more. But it remains a place where locals like to hang out.
One of those locals is Al Herzog, who lives about a mile from the restaurant. He’s lived in town for 44 years and used to frequent Time Out Taverne. Longtime Durham resident Ann Moscovics was a regular at Time Out too.
When it closed, both lost their go-to spot to see friends.
Horseshoe Taverne opened in late October 2019. Herzog and Moscovics said it’s different, but not in a bad way.
“I like the atmosphere, it's nice, it's open,” Moscovics said. “It's more open than what it used to be.”

Co-owner Tara Satrazemis and Chris Giotsas took over the building last spring and started on a renovation with The Rockfall Company. Time Out’s leather booths and Fenway Park mural were taken out, and light wood furnishings, white paint and gray wooden ceiling beams were added.
“Overall, we're extremely happy with the way that it turned out,” Satrazemis said. “It is exactly how we envisioned it.”
The new design could be described as modern farmhouse, warm and light.

“It’s been really busy, which is fantastic,” Satrazemis said. “There's been great support from the community and from the local government.”
This week a new menu was introduced. Dishes that weren’t popular were taken off, and a couple of new items — like shrimp scampi and a steak tip sandwich — were added.
The menu also features a variety of American food, like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, pastas and salads. Satrazemis said the burgers and pizzas are big sellers, also the eggplant fries, nachos and big pretzels.
Sound-proofing panels were added to the dining room about a month ago, based on feedback from customers, Satrazemis said. What’s up next?
In the next few months, Horseshoe Taverne will also start serving brunch on the weekends.
“Before we even opened we knew that once we sort of got settled down ... that we would eventually add a brunch in,” Satrazemis said.

The menu and hours are still being determined but will be shared via the restaurant’s social media accounts.
She said they’re also working with the town to address parking lot problems. When the lot fills up, customers park on the road.
A new bar menu that will cater to the happy hour crowd is also planned. Bar customers will still be able to order off the full menu as well. The co-owners are also hoping to eventually expand the outdoor patio.
Horseshoe Taverne is family-friendly. Prices range from $10 to $23 for most entrees and $12 to $24 for pizza. It’s open Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday and Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
