WALLINGFORD — Bank of America is planning to open an ATM center at the corner of Center and Meadow streets this week.
Bank of American closed a branch roughly a block away last year
Tara Burke, Bank of America media relations, said the storefront at 58 Center St. will have two ATMs and is slated to open Tuesday.
“All the ATMs that we’re replacing come with the latest generation of technology and we’re adding new functionality,” Burke said.
Burke said the company began replacing about 16,000 ATMs across the country after customers started moving to mobile banking.
The 1,000-square-foot storefront is the former location of Wallingford Optical, which closed in 2015. The Horton Group LLC worked on renovating the location to house ATMs. Project manager Preston Oros said the project took six weeks to complete.
“We had to drop the floor, reinstall beams so that it is ADA accessible from the sidewalk, and we ripped out the storefront,” Oros said.
Oros said the majority of the renovations have been completed and the ATM machines are slated to be installed today. He said the location will be open 24/7 and accessible with the use of a bank card.
The Bank of America branch at 100 Center St., which the company closed in September, previously operated as the Wallingford Bank and Trust company. The now vacant building served as a bank, in one form or another, for the past 128 years.
