WALLINGFORD — Officials say construction to add nearly 200 apartments near the new train station is “going right along.”

Branford-based development company JFA Management is building 193 new apartments, along Parker Street, as an addition to 120 apartments already on the site, at 53 Parker St.

Town building official Justin Rossetti said the apartments are being constructed in three separate buildings, including an addition to the existing apartment complex.

Rossetti said the 57-unit addition is nearing completion. Work has begun on a second residential building, with 53 units, along with a clubhouse, which will include a yoga room, pet spa and movie theater. Work on the third residential building, with 83 units, hasn’t started yet.

“It’s going right along. Everything is going properly,” Rossetti said about the work.

The 193 new apartments include a mix of studio and one-bedroom units, along with larger one-bedroom apartments that include a “flex room” that can be used for “really whatever someone wants,” said leasing agent Carrie Vass, of Calcagni Real Estate.

Vass said she hopes to have model apartments ready to show later this month and is shooting to begin leasing apartments in the new addition in July. Applications are being accepted now.

The rent for a studio apartment is $1,300 per month, according to a website for the apartment complex. One-bedroom apartments, just under 800 square feet, are available for $1,425 or $1,475 a month. The cost of a one bedroom apartment with “flex room” ranges from $1,575 to $2,050.

All of the units will include a washer and dryer, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and a patio or balcony, Vass said. Each building will include a mail room, trash drop-off room, business bar with Wi-Fi and elevator.

“They're going to be really nice,” Vass said.

“Not having anything like this in the area is going to be really exciting for people,” she added.

The complex will also have a fire pit, dog park and wellness garden.

Town officials have expressed optimism about the economic benefits the new apartments will bring to the nearby downtown area. The apartment complex is across the street from the new train station, located at 343 N. Cherry St, and is part of the town’s transit-oriented development zone.

"The idea being that we create feet on the street in the area around the station and the services that those people visit would be provided in the center of town... I'm very optimistic as to how it will turn out,” Town Planner Kacie Hand said in 2016, when the Planning and Zoning Commission approved the plan.

"Hopefully it will be a boon to business, having more people in the area to use the services, use the restaurants, drop in at the stores. I think it's all good," Mayor William W. Dickinson Jr. said in 2016.

Vass said anyone looking for information about the new apartments can visit
