Wallingford fire officials determine origin of Tuesday night fire on Wharton Brook Drive

WALLINGFORD — Fire officials say Tuesday night’s fire in a Wharton Brook Drive commercial and residential building started in the kitchen of an apartment unit.

Seven residents were displaced, and the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Deputy Fire Chief Joe Czentnar said firefighters responded to 33 Wharton Brook Drive around 8 p.m. and found fire coming from the roof of an apartment above a laundromat. It was brought under control within minutes, and there were no reported injuries.

The apartment had smoke and fire damage, and the laundromat beneath it had water damage. The building is located near the intersection with South Elm Street.

Three other apartments and a convenience store in the same building did not appear to be damaged. A section of Wharton Brook Drive was closed while firefighters were on scene.
