WALLINGFORD — Firefighters made quick work extinguishing a vehicle fire on South Cherry Street Wednesday afternoon.

A call reporting a possible structure fire at the residence, at 289 South Cherry Street, where the vehicle was parked came in shortly before 3:30 p.m. Firefighters who arrived at the scene quickly discovered the vehicle's engine was engulfed in flames. The fire did not spread to the residence, which appeared undamaged.

The flames appeared to have been largely extinguished 20 minutes after the initial call. Firefighters smashed the vehicle's windshield, pried open the dashboard and the engine's hood, spraying down the engine directly with water, to make sure there hadn't been any lingering electrical fires.

The vehicle itself is now inoperable. Officials did not report any injuries to firefighters or residents as a result of the fire.
