Wallingford man charged with DUI, risk of injury to a minor

WALLINGFORD — A local man faces DUI and child endangerment charges stemming from a reported incident Saturday.

John Sweeney, 48, of 21 North St., was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and three counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Police responded to The Pit Stop, 66 Woodhouse Ave. around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, three children told police Sweeney was driving erratically and they asked him to pull over, Lt. Cheryl Bradley said. When the children got out of the vehicle, Sweeney reportedly drove off.

The children walked a short distance to a gas station on Woodhouse Avenue and called 911, Bradley said. Two officers went to Sweeney’s North Street home and took him into custody after he reportedly told them he was drinking and driving. He was later released on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on March 28.
