WALLINGFORD — The Wallingford Family YMCA will recognize members, volunteers, staff and community partners at its 74th annual celebration this month.

YMCA Executive Director Sean Doherty said the honorees, including the owner of Neil’s Donuts and an aerobics instructor, were selected in a process that began last year. The honorees were nominated and voted on by members.

“Each year we celebrate the prior year’s accomplishments and we recognize awardees, members, staff, and volunteers,” Doherty said.

The awards include member of the year, volunteer of the year, youth member of the year and staff member of the year.

Neil Bukowski, owner of Neil’s Donuts, said he was surprised to learn he was voted member of the year.

“When the YMCA needs donations for the community, I give it to them,” Bukowski said.

Doherty said Bukowski, a member for the past six years, has donated donuts and gift certificates for various events.

The volunteer of the year is Doreen Donahue. The staff member of the year, Phyllis Drescher, who teaches water aerobics. YM swim team member Elena Bielesz, 14, is youth member of the year.

Doherty said the organization will also recognize two community partners, the Wallingford Rotary Club and Ferguson & McGuire Insurance.

The Y’s 74th Annual Celebration will take place March 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Masonicare’s Ashlar Village, 74 Cheshire Road. Doherty said tickets to the event are limited but still available.

“We’d love to have the community share in excitement with us,” Doherty said.
