WALLINGFORD — Children topped cupcakes with brightly colored sprinkles and frosting Monday while getting in some last-minute holiday fun at a decorating class hosted by Alyssa’s Cakery.
The cupcakes were shaped like a Christmas tree, Santa hat, a reindeer, and the Grinch. The bakery, located at 156 Center St., regularly holds decorating classes and hosted seven sessions for the holiday season.
“We do them in different holiday flavors like gingerbread, chocolate, peppermint candy cane,” said Owner Alyssa Nieves. “...this is just a fun activity that the kids can do.”
Wallingford Resident Jennifer Sheades said her four-year-old son Spencer loves to bake. The family had a difficult year and the class allowed her to treat her son and spend time together.
“We’re just trying to find anything to make the holiday better this year,” Sheades said.
East Hartford resident Monica Cruz made the drive with her two daughters Avery, 5 and Mariana, 7, because she usually buys cakes from the bakery.
“I usually come here to get the birthday cakes for the kids every year,” Cruz said. “It’s delicious.”
After starting the business more than four years ago, Nieves had the idea to start cake and cupcake decorating classes for children and adults.
The bakery also hosts a Ladies Night every Thursday. Each participant learns how to decorate a six-inch cake. Women can bring their own wine and other beverages.
Nieves said the classes have brought in more business and grown since she started. In February, the bakery will host a Ladies Night event tied to Valentine's Day.
“Each year it gets better and better,” Nieves said.
