WALLINGFORD — A man was injured in a fire that started in the garage of his Northford Road home Friday night.

The man, who lived at 72 Northford Road, suffered significant burns and was taken by ambulance to Bridgeport Hospital, said Fire Battalion Chief Kris Sundwall.

The fire was reported around 6:20 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the attached garage was engulfed, Sundwall said.

Firefighters squelched the blaze in about an hour, preventing it from spreading to the house, Sundwall said.

Sundwall said no firefighters or other residents of the home reported injuries.  Firefighters rescued a cat they found in the home.

The Wallingford Office of Emergency Management responded to provide temporary shelter for the residents.

Sundwall said multiple vehicles in the garage were heavily damaged. The house sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause is under investigation.
