WALLINGFORD — Some local food pantries and food banks are experiencing a shortage as donations decline in the summer months.
Master’s Manna food pantry manager Susan Heald said the majority of food donations are made during the holiday season, from approximately November to January. The pantry receives significantly fewer donations from schools and individuals in the warmer months, while the demand remains constant.
The pantry serves “the same amount of people but is not getting the same amount of donations,” she said.
Master’s Manna, 428 S. Cherry St., provides food for about 400 families a week, but is out of popular items such as cereal, pasta and soup.
End Hunger Connecticut works with community organizations to provide resources for low-income families. Executive Director Robin Lamott Sparks said in many towns families who are eligible for free or reduced price lunch and breakfast through the school system don’t have that option in the summer and can pay pay more than $300 per child to provide the same food.
“For families who have kids at home (during the summer) it’s an extra burden,” she said.
Heald said many of the food drives for Master’s Manna are organized through schools and those are eliminated when school is on summer break. She understands donating may not be the first priority in the summer, but said any amount can help.
“See what’s on sale, pick up an item or two,” Heald said. “Any donation would be gratefully accepted to help in the leaner times.”
