Wallingford man fatally struck while crossing street on electric wheelchair

WALLINGFORD — A local man died after he was struck by a minivan while crossing South Main Street Sunday in an electric wheelchair, police said. 

The incident occurred in the area of South Main and Cedar streets around 4:26 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Stephen Jaques said in a statement Monday.

Timothy Cain, 62, of Wallingford, was crossing South Main Street in an electric wheelchair when he was struck. Cain later died at Yale New Haven Hospital, Jaques said. 

A Toyota Sienna minivan traveling south on South Main Street collided with Cain as he was attempting to cross the street, Jaques said. Police did not release the name of the driver.

The driver and a passenger in the van were not injured, Jaques said. 

The incident is under investigation. Anyone who witnessed it or the events before the collision are asked to contact Officer Christian Evans at 203-294-2819.
