WALLINGFORD — A couple for whom coffee has been a part of nearly their entire lives is preparing for the opening day of their own coffee and beer business, Yellow King Brews.

“To us, coffee and beer go together,“ co-owner Shama Khan said. “So we want to bring a gathering place to Wallingford.”

Originally from Bridgeport, co-owners Rob Vitale and Khan started out selling coffee online in 2018. Their new business is scheduled to open on Route 5 in Wallingford on Feb. 11.

“During the pandemic, we ended up having time off from our jobs, like everyone else,” Vitale said. “So we decided to take it much more seriously.”

Yellow King Brews, 920 S. Colony Road, is a craft coffee company that specializes in cold brew coffee, iced teas and hot brewed coffee.

Vitale and Khan met through family friends before working at Starbucks together, where their relationship blossomed. They both said they have fond memories of their childhood that involved coffee.

Khan said opening the business will allow them to combine the idea of a coffee shop and brewery. Although they won’t brew beer themselves, it is a goal to sell the “best of Connecticut craft beer.”

“The first coffee houses were actually gathering places to discuss and socialize,” she said. “So we wanted to bring that atmosphere back into coffee houses. We had seen that breweries had mastered that idea.”

Mike McDowell, an employee at Club 24, which is in the same plaza as Yellow King Brews, said gym staff are really looking forward to the opening.

“I don’t know too much about it, but from what I’ve seen it looks pretty cool,” McDowell said. “It’ll be great to have something new and different in the area.”

Yellow King Brews will also sell snacks and bar food, and host live bands and art shows. In the summer, they will have outdoor seating for up to 45 people.

“This is a dream,” Vitale said. “It’s special. It’s something we thought we’d do when we’d retire from our day jobs. COVID gave us the opportunity to just do it now.”

Yellow King Brews, 920 S. Colony Road, will be open Monday to Wednesday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday and Friday 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturday the shop will be open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
