True leadership

“The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes.” — Tony Blair.

Elections are interesting. Challengers portray virtually any topic — often quite inaccurately — as an “election issue”. The common theme is “just say ‘yes’”. And, naturally, “yes” involves spending money.

In government, as in our own lives, there are important questions: Do we need this? Can we afford that now? What is the cost? If we do this, what else will have to be postponed? How much debt are we willing to accept? The answers are rarely, if ever, as simple as some people might like us to believe.

Apparently, some candidates are all about “yes”. They think the Town should do more, be more, provide more, and have more — and, miraculously, without raising more taxes. Does that make sense?  If elected officials were to say “yes” to these so-called election issues, where would the money come from? That answer is simple: from you and me.

Anyone who listens, really listens, knows that Mayor Dickinson considers all of the facts before making decisions. That doesn’t mean that everyone will always agree. However, those decisions, while not necessarily always popular, are always made with the whole town’s long-term best interests in mind. That’s true at budget time and at election time.

Eugene Habecker, an author on leadership, wrote: “The true leader serves. Serves people. Serves their best interests, and in doing so will not always be popular, may not always impress. But because true leaders are motivated by loving concern rather than a desire for personal glory, they are willing to pay the price.”

We have a mayor who exemplifies true leadership and who continues to serve us very well. Please join me in voting to re-elect Mayor Bill Dickinson.
