WEDNESDAY SCHOLASTICS: Cheshire ski photos from Mount Southington; Wilcox boys, Platt & LH girls get back in basketball win column

HARTFORD — The Platt girls basketball team got back in the win column Wednesday, snapping a four-game skid with a 38-19 CCC Region D victory over Bulkeley/SMSA at Sport Sciences & Medical Academy.

Wallica Bailey led the way for the Panthers with 16 points.

Ja’Lexia West was also in double figures for Platt with 12 points. Vianna Alcantara added eight.

Platt improved to 2-4 with a home date looming Friday against undefeated Newington, the No. 3-ranked team in the state.

Bulkeley/SMSA dropped to 0-4.

Lyman Hall 36, Branford 32: The Trojans bounced back from Tuesday night’s loss to East Haven with the SCC triumph over the Hornets in Branford.

Down 16-14 at the break, the Trojans took charge in the third quarter, outscoring Branford 14-2.

The Hornets closed to within three in the waning moments. LH iced it at the free throw line.

Brianna Mik scored a team-high 14 points for the Trojans and also snared nine rebounds. Natalie Panagrosso registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 points.

Point guard Grace Gagliardi dished five assists while adding seven points.

Gabbery Lucertini led Branford with 16 points. 

LH is back at .500 at 3-3. Branford fell to 1-6.

Wolcott Tech 50, Wilcox Tech 23: The Torrington squad remained unbeaten with the CTC victory over the visiting Indians.

Wolcott Tech, which also beat the Tribe 47-32 in Meriden on Feb. 25, improved to 4-0. Wilcox dipoped to 4-3.

The Indians were coming off 33-32 loss Tuesday to Prince Tech in Hartford. Wilcox had a one-point lead and possession with a minute to go only to turn the ball over. Prince capitalized for the winning basket.

Boys basketball

Wilcox Tech 56, Kaynor Tech 40: The Indians left their shooting woes of Monday night in the rearview mirror, returning to the win column with the CTC triumph in Waterbury.

Isaiah Thomas totaled 23 points and Carlos Cintron collected 14. The Tribe also got nine points from Alex D’Errico.

WIlcox (7-2) carved out a 24-19 lead by halftime, then outscored Kaynor (2-5) 32-21 in the second half.

Mike Morales and Jayson Jean-Baptiste had 10 apiece for the Panthers.

Maloney 74, Bulkeley 36: The Spartans ran their spotless mark to 7-0 with the CCC Region D romp in Hartford on Tuesday night.

Senior point guard Vincent Martinez went off for a season-high 28 points to lead the way.

Senior forward Garrison Kunst added 10 points and freshman Marquis Ward was good for eight.

Boys swimming

Farmington 97, Meriden Co-op 80: Platt sophomore Mehdi Moumen was a double-winner for the city squad in this Central Connecticut Conference meet at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford.

Moumen captured the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.76, then won a thrilling 100 freestyle by .18 of a second with a time of 52.22.

Maloney juniors Sam Hurlburt and Joe Peralta added single victories. Hurlburt had a fast time of 1:05.68 in the 100 breaststroke. Peralta took the 200 free in 1:57.78.

Peralta was also strong in the 500 freestyle. He finished 1.04 seconds off the pace with a second-place time of 5:22.62.

The Co-op now stands at 2-2.
