THURSDAY SCHOLASTICS: Back to full strength, Rams rip ND; Cheshire girls put up another 20

WEST HAVEN —Jason Raba and Charles Kurtz found the back of the net four times and Andrew Vernon made nine saves at the other end Thursday night in the Cheshire boys lacrosse team’s 18-7 SCC victory over host Notre Dame-West Haven at Veteran’s Stadium.

The Rams got widespread contributions in improving to 5-1 and knocking ND to 3-4. Jack Lovelace scored two goals and set up three others. Brian Bouwman had five assists to go along with one goal.

P.J. Cass, Max Manware and Evan Stern scored two goals apiece. Jack Davis had one.

Aidan Gaudet was 21-for-28 on faceoffs. Jack Wable notched his first varsity point with an assist.

Lyman Hall 14, Hamden 9: The Trojans stand at 5-2 after chalking up the SCC victory in Hamden.

Girls lacrosse

Cheshire 21, North Haven 2: For a third straight game, the Rams went over 20 goals to post a SCC victory.

Cheshire got five goals against North Haven from Raegan Bailey, including the 100th of her career.

Taylor Warburton also scored five goals and added four assists for her second nine-point game of the week.

Ava Matikowski and Lauren Samela contributed two goals apiece for Cheshire. Audrey Bronson made eight saves in net before giving way to Danny Melius.

The Rams, now 7-1, face a big game Saturday. They hit the road to face undefeated New Canaan (5-0).

Lyman Hall 10, Jonathan Law 9: Claire Riccitelli-Pestana and Sam Ralston rang up four goals apiece to lead the Trojans to the SCC win Wednesday night in Milford.

Lauren Cretella corralled 22 saves. The Trojans improved to 4-2.


Sheehan 10, Shelton 4: Jenna Cyr went 3-for-3 with three doubles to lead the Titans to the SCC crossover win in Wallingford on Wednesday. Cyr and the Titans improved to 4-4.

Boys golf

Southington 177, Lewis Mills 190: Ryan O’Donnell medalled for the Blue Knights with a round of 42 at Hawk’s Landing Country Club.

The match was the first of the year for the Blue Knights (1-2) on their home course. They opened with road losses to Avon at Blue Fox Run (146-185) and to Hall at Rockledge Golf Club (177-192).

Fairfield Prep 157, Cheshire 173: The Rams (4-1) suffered their first loss of the year in an early season showdown with the Jesuits (5-1) at Brooklawn Country Club.

A.J. DePaolo had a team-low round of 40 for Cheshire.  Nick Fortunato and Jack Brewster both shot 44. Riley Brabant came in at 45.

Girls golf

Cheshire 189, Amity 197: Sydney Hidalgo had the medal round for the Rams with a 43 at Southington Country Club.

Mackenzie Corcoran carded a 46, Bella DelRosso enjoyed a round of 48 and Molly Demeo capped the scoring with a 52.

Cheshire, which already had wins over Lauralton Hall and Mercy, is now 3-0. The Rams and Amity play the second half of their home-and-home set Monday at Race Brook Country Cub.

Boys tennis

Southington 6, Simsbury 1: The Blue Knights swept singles en route to a CCC West triumph Wednesday in Southington that raised their record to 6-1.

Sam Raniolo pitched a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 1 and Kajetan Naworol followed with a 6-0, 6-1 verdict at No. 2.

Dan Mathew was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at No. 3. Pranav Vunnava took care of business 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

In doubles, the No. 1 pairing of Pio Castellano and Dom Sisco prevailed 6-2, 6-4. Josh Budnik and Matt Jagos delivered a 6-2, 7-5  decision at No. 3.

Sheehan 6, Foran 1: The Titans, like the Blue Knights, improved to 6-1 with a win on Wednesday, theirs coming in Milford.
