MONDAY SOFTBALL: Valiant Titans battle, but Rams remain undefeated; Platt swats Hornets from the yard



WALLINGFORD — Sheehan softball put up a much better fight in its return bout with Cheshire, but could not knock off the unbeaten Rams in a SCC Housatonic matchup on Monday.

The Titans were dead-even with Cheshire, 2-2, through four innings before the Rams broke things open with five runs in the top of the fifth.

Cheshire improved to 10-0. Sheehan, which fell to the Rams 13-0 on April 19, is 5-5.

Kailey Sweigard and Trinadey Santiago remained red-hot with the bats for Cheshire. Sweigard, coming off a two-homer week, went 4-for-4 with a triple, double and two singles. She drove in two runs.

Santiago connected for a home run and two doubles. She had three RBI.

Sheehan got to Cheshire ace Bri Pearson for eight hits. Reilly Hunter, Dannielle Geary and Gabriella Gawlak had two apiece.

Hunter doubled and drove in both Sheehan runs. Geary tripled.

Pearson and Karla Carangelo added RBI for Cheshire, which staked itself to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third before Sheehan answered in the bottom half.

Grace Lurz and Gracie Hemstock contributed two hits each for the Rams.

Platt 7, East Hartford 1: Emily Hart fired a two-hitter and Brooklyn Cividanes, Tori Talento and Adriana Aponte all left the yard in the Panthers’ CCC interdivisional win in Meriden.

Hart allowed singles in the fifth and sixth innings while striking out 12.

The Panthers (5-4) bolted to a 2-0 lead on Talento’s two-run homer in the first. Cividanes and Aponte had two-run blasts in Platt’s five-run third. Cividanes (3-for-3) also had a single and double. Talento and Aponte were both 2-for-3. All three girls collected two RBI.

Southington 23, New Britain 0 (5 inn.): Julia Panarella, Madison Furniss, Stella Blanchard and Sam Sullivan combined on a one-hitter in New Britain as the Blue Knights improved to 7-1.
