AROUND THE HORN: Women’s course record falls at Meriden Fun Run; Hunter Club Championship tees off Saturday

MERIDEN — Selena Chatman returned to the Meriden Fun Run at Platt High School this week and eclipsed her old course record of 19:47 with a time of 19:25.

Problem was, Bria Benigni also showed up for this week’s Fun Run, and the rising Maloney sophomore was even faster with an 18:53.

Benigni, in fact, finished third overall at the third race of the 2021 summer series, and she wasn’t all that far behind winner Derek Destefano and runner-up Richard Fernandes.

Destefano, the Maloney cross country coach, covered the three-mile course down the Meriden Linear Trail to Dossin Beach and back in 18:08. Fernandes finished in 18:50.

Chatman was fifth overall. She came in after fourth-place finisher Brian Kimmey (19:09).

Rounding out the top 10 were Joseph Migliore (19:45), Jack Curry (19:46), Quinn Handler (20:06), Peter Hornak (20:28) and Dajjah Dudley (21:23).

Cristina Sendral, the third female finisher, was 11th overall in 21:39.

This year’s Fun Run series continues to draw well. Even with heat, 40 runners turned out on Wednesday evening.

The series continues every Wednesday through August 18. Start time is 6:30 p.m. at the Platt track.

Races are free and open to runners of all abilities. The three-mile course is flat, with most of it on the Meriden Linear Trail. There is also a ¾-mile kids race.

There are no current COVID-19 restrictions, but runners must bring their own water.
