AROUND THE HORN: Bird, Slowther bring home Hunter Women’s club championships



MERIDEN — Connie Bird shot a low gross of 166 and Bette Slowther came home with a low net of 146 to capture the Hunter Women’s Club Championship this weekend at Hunter Golf Course.

The championship covered 36 holes played over two days.

Bird shot rounds of 81 and 85. She won by eight strokes over Jeanne Pac, who captured the Championship Flight with a score of 174.

M.J. Petretto was third overall and second in the Championship Flight at 175.

Slowther, meanwhile, had matching rounds of 73 to take the President’s Cup for overall low net. She edged Mrya Reynolds (147) by one stroke.

Reynolds had low net in the Championship Flight. Lisa Bishop was second in that bracket at net 154.

In the Second Flight, Judy Soprano secured low gross with a 193. Marian Michnowicz was runner-up at 198.

Chet Mrazik grabbed low net with a 151, clipping Mary Galati (152) by one stroke.

Low net in the Third Flight was also decided by one stroke. Barbara McCoy came in at 157, M.J. Willeman at 158.

Mariel Albee had low gross at 202. Sangsook Cho (226) was runner-up.
