AROUND THE HORN: Winters, Owls hit nationals; Marks, Sullivan team up with AMC; Reunion planning session rescheduled

Winters, Owls close at nationals

NEW HAVEN — Sheehan grad Avery Winters’ rookie season of indoor track at Southern Connecticut State University culminated with a 12th-place finish with the 4x400 relay team at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach.

Winters and teammates Hannah Caiola, Izzy Newbury and Ella Maclean posted a time of time of 3:49.35, which was the fastest in their heat. The quartet won this year’s Northeast-10 Conference championship.

The appearance by Winters and the 4x400 relay team at nationals was the first for Southern’s women’s indoor track program since Meriden’s Briana Burt qualified in 2019.

Marks, Sullivanfuel AMC baseball

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Justin Marks and Jason Sullivan, summer teammates in the Greater Hartford Twilight Baseball League with the Record-Journal Expos, played pivotal roles in Albertus Magnus College’s 3-1 victory Monday over Plymouth State on a spring break trip to the Palmetto State.

Marks, a freshman left-hander from Beacon Falls, earned his first collegiate win by throwing a complete-game 3-hitter. Marks struck out six and walked three.

He was staked to a 1-0 lead when Sullivan, a senior infielder out of Platt, connected for a RBI single with runners at the corners in the first inning.

The Falcons continue their trip in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday against St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn.
