AROUND THE HORN: Even-par dictates Hunter fall member tourney; Hunter women edge Stanley GC; Rocco completes season sweep at Thompson



MERIDEN — The teams of Paul Bernier-Doan Nguyen and Mike Deegan-Rick Merliss both shot an even-par 71 to win their respective flights at the Hunter Men’s Club’s 2020 Fall Member-Member Tournament on Sunday.

Bernier and Nguyen took Flight 1. Deegan and Merliss captured Flight 2.

Birdies by Nguyen on No. 3, 6 and 17 were crucial as he and Bernier beat Flight 1 runners-up Jason Komerowski and Robert Papenguth by three strokes. Komerowski had birdies on No. 5 and 9.

In Flight 2, Deegan and Merliss won by one stroke ahead of Alex Newton and Rob D’Agostino. Deegan and D’Agostino both rang up three birdies on the back nine. Newton had one on No. 9.

Sunday’s format was best-ball gross and best-ball net. Low net in Flight 1 was 65. It was carded by Larry and Bill Valintas as well as by Bernier and Nguyen. Newton and D’Agostino’s low net of 14-under-par 57 paced Flight 2.

The Hunter Men’s Club caps the 2020 season with next week’s AB Gross + CD Net Tournament.

Hunter women edge Stanley GC

MERIDEN — The women of Hunter Golf Course won their annual match-play tournament against Stanley Golf Course on Sunday.

It was a tight contest, with the Hunter squad pulling out a 72½-71½ triumph.

Teams earned one point for each hole won and a half point for each hole tied.

Playing for Hunter were Nancy Sattler, Myra Mazzetta-Sanchez, Alice Schilling, Fran Beedle, Sharon Maloney, Linda Falis, Jeannie Pac, Bette Slowther, Connie Bird, M.J. Petretto, Lisa Bishop, Marian Michnowicz, Mara Dunleavy, Sherri Gracia, Leslie Pitiger and Chet Mrazik.

Members of the Stanley team were Janet DeBaise, Karen Maher, Joann Galati, Sally Wlordarski, Sue Siegars, Michele Saulis, Lisa Lavoie, Pam Dimock, Carole Oat, Linda Hamm, Nancy Riggott, Patty Reilly, Jean Trzasko, Marta Urillo, Diane Hunter and Deb James.

Hawks Landing hosting Swing Fore

SOUTHINGTON — The Swing Fore Golf Tournament to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut will play at Hawk’s Landing Country Club next Monday, Oct. 19.

Registration and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. Lunch follows at 12:30 p.m. 

Entry fee is $125 per person and $500 per foursome.

on Chamber Zoom

MIDDLETOWN — UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley will be the keynote speaker on the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce’s virtual Zoom luncheon this Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The session runs from noon to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required at middlesexchamber.com. 

Cost is $10 for Chamber members, $15 for non-members.

Rocco sweeps

season series

THOMPSON — Keith Rocco held off Ronnie Williams down the stretch to take the checkered flag Sunday at the Sunoco World Series and complete a season sweep of the Modified Division at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

Rocco started third in the 30-lap race and shot into the lead on Lap 4. The victory was career win No. 288 for the Wallingford native.

Meriden native Eric Berndt finished fifth.

The World Series closed the 2020 season at Thompson. The event was highlighted by the Whelen Modified Tour finale. Craig Lutz of Miller Place, N.Y. won the race. Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville, N.Y. won the series title.
